I've seen this film in ~1998, in uncommercial cinema in Dresden. It's possible the main acting person was called Ubald (or even the picture name was the same?)

It's the story of the life a boy/young man. He was very strange, incompatible, freak in the eyes of others. The picture is telling his life story from childhood, in Kaiser-Schule, youth, then in the war...

I think it was a German production picture.
